Reading this lecture notes was like being on cruise control. it had more philosophical content than computational or technical.
At the begining, i felt that this lecture is mis-placed. it should’ve been at the begining. However, as I went further it was answering all my queries that i had after absorbing previous lecture ‘navigating Design space’. This might be an evidence of your vast teaching experience…may be!
I enjoyed the sub-topic ‘Knowledge is a double edged sword’. I can so much relate it to my daily practice scenario…sometimes it is a blessing in disguise to have a senior more experienced business partner in Design field, it acts a good balancing factor between creativity and knowledge.
Moreover, under same sub-heading, you talk about academic / university scenarios. Ha ha ha!!! it is so very true!
On that note, i would like to share my university experience, in my 4th year architecture, i was experimenting with different architectural theories, methodologies and styles. I took a particular liking towards De-constructivism. Partly because of its rich history and context and partly because its end product always ended up with ‘funky’ geometry…well i was a student than.
Subsequently, in my 8th semester design project, i chose to tackle it by assuming this is built in 80′s and will apply desconstructivism. Half way down the semester my tutor / design guide warned me that I’ve tried to push design boundaries way beyond ‘feasibility’…and chaces are you might end up failing this project. Asked me, if i want to still go ahead or take a ‘sensible’ detour and make more stable and real design.
My reaction was instant, dont mind if i fail…I’m enjoying this process and will take it till its end. Don’t know if i have that courage to do it now when clients money is at stake…
After this lecture note i dont know if i have become conservative or have i acquired bit more knowledge than my schooling days…but surely i do not like this present state of mine…May be i need to acquire more and more knowledge to break though this conservatism? dont know!
