To learn generative design you need to be first familiar with parametric design. Parametric design is the basis of most Mechanical CAD packages – such as SolidWorks and Inventor. Rhino on the other hand is not a parametric CAD package, but it comes with a plugin called grasshopper that makes it parametric.
To learn generative design it is best to jump into communities that are structured to support self learning such as the Grasshopper community and the processing community. Processing is not a CAD package but you can generate designs with it. It is more suitable for generative graphics and animation.
